Provinces likely to make vaccination mandatory, says federal health minister

Health Minister Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says vaccination remains the only way out of the pandemic

Provinces are likely to introduce mandatory vaccination policies in the coming months to deal with the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, Health Minister Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said today.

Duclos said it’s time for the provinces to consider requiring vaccination for everyone medically able to get the shot. He said that while rapid tests, masking and social distancing are useful tools, they won’t end the pandemic on their own.

While Duclos said he was expressing a “personal opinion” and not federal policy, he added that he expects Ottawa and the provinces will discuss mandatory vaccination in the coming months.
